About

2016 was the 30th anniversary of choreographer and dancer Liisa Pentti.

To mark the anniversary, the dance company Liisa Pentti +Co organised a look back at Finnish dance in the 1980s. Postmodern Dance in Finland? opens up the thinking of postmodern and so-called new dance artists in the context of today. The whole project took a look at the legacy of that era in contemporary and contemporary dance. Can performing history make visible the assumptions through which we understand artistry, art-making and artworks?

During 2016, two Postmodern Dance in Finland? events were organised, the first of which took place in Suvilahti Tiivistämö from 5 to 14 May 2016.

The spring event featured two of Liisa Pentti's works La Folia @2016 and The Weight of My Heart . Liisa Pentti has invited both key figures from the 1980s and younger artists to reflect on where dance is now, and what developments are taking place in today's art. Hanna Järvinen will lecture on the (dance) historian's use of power and Kirsi Monni will talk about her own artistic work. Annika Tudeer will reflect on her own artistic path and Jaana Irmeli Turunen will seek a broader perspective on the transformation of dance art in the 1980s in a solo work of movement and words. Soili Hämäläinen will talk about a book she is currently writing on the early stages of the Dance Department at the Theatre Academy in the 1980s. The spring event will end with a panel discussion with younger choreographers invited by Liisa Pentti: Veronika Lindberg, Maija Reeta Raumanni, Rea-Liina Brunou and Soili Huhtakallio.
