NAF: NORM IS F!CTION # 5/3

A performative concert with 392

392 is an electronic instrument invented by NAF that is 6 meters long and with 392 black keys. It is a keyboard, a sculpture, an archive of sounds that have been collected and developed through the years, and it is a node. It is a technology for collectively becoming visible and audible.

NAF are Nana Hülsewig and Fender Schrade from Stuttgart. Since 2013 they have been working consistently on an aesthetic of transgression in the areas of pop music, theater and the visual arts. The duo has received numerous awards for their performances onstage and in public spaces. In NORM IST F! KTION # 5/3 – Together in the universe of sound, they work together with the soprano Hannah Mae Mehler from Zurich and the composer and performer Neo Huelcker from Berlin.

Magnús Logi Kristinsson: Rubber Band Performance

Rubber bands dropping, endlessly sounding, while thinking, wondering about everything and nothing, mesmerised.

Born in 1975 in Iceland, Magnus Logi Kristinsson has been creating solo performances since 1999, when he moved to Amsterdam to study at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, where he focused on performative practice and receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in 2003.

Language and the body become structural and sculptural forms in Kristinsson’s performance-based practice. Through a systematic manner of speaking, his diverse listings become a mix of concrete poetry and music, while his physical presence is put to the test as it borders on the inanimate.

Programme

In order to keep up momentum and give shape to action, we need theory and discourse.

In the Universe of Sound symposium we will present contributions by artists working collaboratively and across genres.

One of the shared topics in the lectures and discussions will address questions about what kind of connections are being made between sound, music and stage action. This topic will include conceptualising the stage within a larger framework than the theatre stage, and the themes of creating meaning and communication with audiences.

We are searching for no less than the essence of it all and how the outcome of these talks and lectures can create an impact and a shift in concepts of music theatre. The topics of the symposium are new music theatre, nostalgia in the relation of dance and music in 2021, devised opera, electronic music and sound, norms, gender, sensuality, and essence.

The day ends with a roundtable discussion where everyone present is invited to take part.

Keynote: Iñigo Giner Miranda
Artist talks: NAF, Libero Mureddu
Artist dialogues: Essi Kausalainen & Annika Tudeer (Oblivia), Rachel MacIntosh & Yiran Zhao (Oblivia) and Patrick Kosk & Liisa Pentti
Moderator: Pia Lindy

YÁO YÈ #3
YÁO YÈ #3 (2019)

Keynote speaker
Iñigo Giner Miranda

The talk will present a framework for analysing different interdisciplinary projects (mainly concentrated on Musiktheater sub-genres), both from the perspective of the result as well as through the actual creative process.

Iñigo Giner Miranda is at home in a number of places – not only geographically speaking, but also artistically: classically educated as a composer and pianist, he works regularly as concert designer, composer or performer/musician in concert halls and theatres all across Europe. He has, e.g., worked for directors such as Barbara Frey, Ruedi Häusermann, Matthias Rebstock, or Rafael Sánchez at some of Europe’s leading venues: Schauspielhaus Zürich, Teatro Real Madrid, Schauspielhaus Köln, or HAU Berlin among others.

As composer and concert stager he was selected for the #bebeethoven programme of the Kulturstiftung des Bundes (Germany’s Federal Cultural Foundation), where he has collaborated for three years with the Zürich Tonhalle orchestra on the development of staged concerts for the orchestra. Since 2014, he also regularly works with Podium Esslingen, staging concerts and creating new formats for them, some of which have toured to places such as Lucerne Festival, Pierre-Boulez Saal Berlin, or Radialsystem V. He also regularly assists or creates stage concerts together with ensembles or soloists – for example, at the Munich Biennale 2012, L’auditori Barcelona, or Gare du Nord in Basel.

He also regularly teaches at the UdK Berlin with a special emphasis on new concert formats and stage work for musicians -subject matters he has also discussed in seminars and courses at, among others, Budapest Music Center, Musikene Music College of the Basque Country, Humboldt University Berlin, and EVA Conference London (Electronic and the visual arts).

Together in the Universe of Sound / Frans Poelstra & Oleg Soulimenko: MADE IN HOME

Duration ca. 50 min, artist talk after the performance

Our stage will be like a construction site because it’s the place where we are going to build our home.
Our home is made of everyday objects, things we find on the street (we are quite ecological, but we have our flaws), music instruments, songs, little dances, poetry, and our bodies. Our home will be safe and the perfect place to let our staggering creativity blossom. And we the performers will be undisturbed, driven, and purposeful in accomplishing our task: the creation of MADE IN HOME.

Our music is a mix of neo-folklore, total jazz, psychedelic ghost punk, contemporary-country & (very) western, minimal indy grunge, deep lounge house, plus a touch of downtempo fusion. Our lyrics come straight from the dance floor, our bones, our home countries, and today’s global politics. Fuck Greed, fuck Pooting! Hurray to the necessary ones! And yes, we play with great enthusiasm and love!

You can look at MADE IN HOME as a concert, you can hear it as a performance, and you can feel it as a work of art.

Oleg Soulimenko (RUS/A)
Born far away and living near you, Oleg Soulimenko is an artist who likes doing too many different things. He grew up in a huge city where it was not allowed to listen to rock’n’roll and to dance with a naked torso, but he did both. For the last 20 years he’s lived in Vienna, thousands of miles away from that place. Oleg is well-known as a longtime survivor in a country of which he cannot speak the language. His work is recognisable through his very personal style and autobiographical contexts. Oleg is working in the fields of performance art and contemporary dance in Austria, Europe, and the USA.

Frans Poelstra (NL/A)
As a child Frans Poelstra spent more time staring into the waters of the canals in Amsterdam than at school. Dreaming of becoming the next Jimi Hendrix, but having no talent to play the guitar, he decided to work in the arts — the place where you can dream professionally. For him, performing is a matter of keeping channels open in order to think, to listen, and to dream. He makes work which mixes dance with theatre, music, and visual arts in a way which makes people think: “Am I dreaming, is this really possible or at least acceptable?” And like Oleg, Frans is also working in the fields of performance art and contemporary dance in Austria, Europe, but no longer in the USA.

Mabel returns at Together in the Universe of Sound festival!

Mabel Revival is a hilarious and ruthless mix of dance, performance and cabaret. The choreographer Liisa Pentti and the musician Gonazalo Muruaga Olguin are taking their audience into a charmed world of the female divas, those icons of our adoration and objects of our desire. Mabel is a woman without remorse, a female diva and shaman-performer. To celebrate life one needs to speak about death and embrace the realms where we can enter only in our dreams – thus the story of Mabel Revival.

The inspiration for the work Ref2020 has been Brian Eno’s 58-minute-long composition Reflection. The work, created with six dancers, suggests a new kind of connection between contemporary dance and Eno’s music where the meditative music creates singing and historicity of movement.

In every moment and continually, the dancers modify their movement paths with microscopic precision by observing the dialogue between movement and mind and by making constant choices about space and timing. The rich and unpredictable movement language acts at times as a counterpoint to the soundscape and sometimes independently, without a primary relationship to the music.

Ref2020 is a light work in dark times. The music and dance create a landscape inside which the viewer can allow him/herself to experience floating, timelessness and dreams that occasionally remind us about a past that perhaps never was.

Liisa Pentti +Co Studio is located at Bulevardi 31, in a former chemistry lab of the Helsinki University of Technology, built in 1899. This is the setting for the work where both the shared and the private becomes apparent through the alchemistic metamorphoses born in the dancers and in the space.
