Cloudbody – an ecology of dreams #1

20.-29.9.19 VIIRUS Theatre, Helsinki

What kind of memories arise in different phases of our lives? How do we merge with those memories and how do the memories become a part of our selfhood, a part that we carry with us that is unconscious and often mute. What kind of metamorphoses are created by stepping into the image of memory?

Cloudbody – an ecology of dreams #1 is a choreographic sound art work that combines text, voice and image to create a bodily experience. Memories and dreams merge forming a fabric where the viewer becomes an experiencer in this surrealistic dramaturgy that materializes the logic of dreams.

The Body

Liisa Pentti’s duet with the award-winning Danish performance artist Bo Madvig lets the body to take centre stage. The unspoken dialogue between the performers does not present but rather makes visible the interaction between mind and body in time and space. The movement arising from within examines the possibilities and impossibilities of bodies in space. What do we see when we look at the body? Are we able to look at it as separate from signifying?

Liisa Pentti +Co’s Sight Seeing performed at INACT Festival 2019

Sight Seeing, a performance by Liisa Pentti and Paul Pignon will be performed at INACT Festival in Strasbourg, France, on 4th May 2019.

Sight Seeing is a performance combining dance, speech, music and interactive media. An online camera attached to the dancer projects real-time image on the screen bringing the dialogue between movement and stillness as part of the work. Every performance of Sight Seeing is different; the work always varies according to the space and the audience. The improvisatory performance explores gaze and perception. The gaze of the performer, seen through the video projection, meets the gaze of the audience. The live interaction between the performer, musicians and audience grows important in the momentary, uncontrollable atmosphere of the work.

Liisa Pentti workshop 12.-13.4.

“The mind has the body as its object”
Ote fyysikko Karen Baradin haastattelusta

Liisa Pentti ohjaa kahden päivän työpajan Esitystaiteen keskuksessa Suvilahdessa 12.-13.4.

Työpaja pohjautuu seuraaville kysymyksille: Voimmeko luoda liikettä, joka on kielen, kulttuuristen kuvien ja niiden merkitysten ulkopuolella? Liikettä, joka luottaa omaan olemassaoloonsa ilman ulkopuolisia merkityksiä. Miten tietoisuuden rajamailla oleva kehollinen tieto voi synnyttää uusia merkityksiä? Mikä on kielen ja merkityksen suhde ja miten kieli vaikuttaa tanssiimme? Miten tanssimme musiikkiin?

Hän on käyttänyt puhuttua ja kirjoitettua tekstiä lukuisissa töissään, muun muassa uusimmassa teoksessaan Hauraat silmät – Fragile eyes (2019) sekä Why Does My Sister Not Like Contemporary Art – (2014) ja Mabel – The Queen of Bones (2008) -teoksissaan.

Kurssi sopii tanssin ja teatterin ammattilaisille, opiskelijoille, edistyneille harrastajille sekä kaikille liikkeen mahdollisuuksista kiinnostuneille.

“The mind has the body as its object”
Excerpt form an interview with physician Karen Barad”

Choreographer and artistic director Liisa Pentti leads a movement workshop at Eskus – Performance Center at Suvilahti, Helsinki.

The workshop is based on the following questions: can we create movement that does not submit to the meanings of language and cultural images? Movement that trusts its own existence without outside meanings. How does the bodily knowledge in the borders of consciousness create new meanings? What is the relationship between language and meaning and how does language influence our dancing? How do we dance to music?

The rawness of our body holds a vast amount of kinesthetic information, experience and learned patterns. It also holds the elusive and indescribable self, constantly changing and transforming. The workshop will concentrate on these themes and the kinesthetic shapes arising from them, not forgetting surprises.

Liisa Pentti has worked extensively with meanings that combine dance and language. She has used spoken and written text in many of her works, amongst others Hauraat silmät – Fragile eyes (2019), Why Does My Sister Not Like Contemporary Art (2014) and Mabel – The Queen of Bones (2008).

The workshop is open to dance and theatre professionals and students and everyone interested in the possibilities of movement.

Time: Friday 12.4. at 17.30-20 and Saturday 13.4. at 10-13.30
Location: Eskus – Performance Center, Suvilahti (Building no 6 ”Puhdistamo”, second floor)
Instructor: Liisa Pentti

Performance of The Body at TEHDAS Teatteri, Turku

Liisa Pentti‘s and Bo Madvig‘s duet The Body will be performed at TEHDAS Teatteri, Turku, on 5th April. The performance is part of a three-day festival called Bodybuilding.

The Body is a performance about beauty and its simultaneous impossibility; about the complexity of signifying and about human fragility. The work has two intertwining themes: the simultaneity of the past and the future and the collision of thought and sensoriality. The performers create bodily transformations that resonate the timeless and eternal as well as the fleeting nature of life.

The unspoken dialogue between the performers does not present but rather makes visible the interaction between mind and body in time and space. The movement arising from within examines the possibilities and impossibilities of bodies in space. What do we see when we look at the body? Are we able to look at it as separate from signifying?

Premiere of Hauraat silmät – Fragile Eyes at Zodiak – Center for New Dance

Liisa Pentti +Co’s new work Fragile Eyes, based on The Laugh of the Medusa (1975) by the French philosopher and author Hélène Cixous, is a performance combining dance, text and music. The book, a feminist classic, has inspired numerous women and female artists to take a stance against the patriarchality of the Western culture.

Fragile Eyes takes the themes explored by Cixous onto the level of performative action and dreamlike logic. The performance in an immersive fabric where the audioscape and situations, new texts and songs inspired by Cixous’ thinking evoke hallucinatory states of being. Its dreamlike, absurd atmosphere is created when everyday occurrences merge with fantasy. The performance navigates the borderlines between various performing arts yet refuses to lock itself into any single genre.

Performances at Zodiak – Center for New Dance from 19.3. to 30.3.2019.

Tunneilla tehdään monenlaisia tanssia ja musiikkia yhdistäviä harjoituksia, jotka pohjautuvat kontakti-improvisaation, Todd-alignement-tekniikkaan ja Body Mind Centering –menetelmään.
