“the mind has the body as its object” – excerpt from an interview with physicist Karen Barad

Our body holds a vast amount of kinesthetic information, experience and learned patterns. It also holds the elusive and indescribable self, constantly changing and transforming. The two-day workshop, directed by Liisa Pentti, will concentrate on these themes and the kinesthetic shapes arising from them, not forgetting surprises. The work will be based on the following questions: Can we create movement that does not submit to the meanings of language and cultural images, but trusts its own existence so that the bodily knowledge in the borders of consciousness can create new meanings? What is the relationship between language and meaning? How do I dance to music?

The workshop is open to everyone interested in the possibilities of movement.

The Body is a (clear) Place in the Space, part 1: The Body
7th September at 7 pm
Kutomo, Turku

Liisa Pentti’s duet with the award-winning Danish performance artist Bo Madvig lets the body to take centre stage. The unspoken dialogue between the performers does not present but rather makes visible the interaction between mind and body in time and space. The movement arising from within examines the possibilities and impossibilities of bodies in space. What do we see when we look at the body? Are we able to look at it as separate from signifying? And is it at all necessary to do so?

Liisa Pentti +Co’s new large scale production for autumn 2018 is called The Space. The work will premiere at Kiasma Theatre in Helsinki on 13th October.

The working group is rehearsing at Eskus – Esitystaiteen keskus on 16-20th April and will hold a demo performance on the last day of rehearsals, 20th April at 2 pm. The demo is free of charge and open for everyone!

The Space, featuring 7 dancers and a video projection, is a performance about beauty and its impossibility. The performers create visions of body and voice transformations and return these to the beginning where nothing has stayed the same. The Space creates a seemingly chaotic performative landscape that reflects glimpses of beauty. The uninterrupted dialogue between presence and absence forms the poetic tissue of the work.

The Weight of My Heart at Juuret festival in Outokumpu

Liisa Pentti will perform here solo work The Weight of My Heart at Juuret-festival in Outokumpu.

Through a minimalistic form the work recollects ordinary events in Liisa Pentti’s life and of those near and far who have passed away. She creates a floating landscape of personal stories transforming into larger-than-life fiction. Since we are living in times of changes and unpredictability the basic questions are coming to the surface, Liisa Pentti needed to ask the questions: “Can we live in peace with our dead and if so, how? Can we laugh with them and imagine our dearest ones happy on the other side? And what about love?” In this solo, Liisa Pentti is creating a dialogue with her audience in a direct and uncompromizing way.

Liisa Pentti, Veronika Lindberg: Klaustro – shhh! Zodiak – Center for New Dance

21.11.2017

In December 1987, Liisa Pentti performed her first solo work in Finland as a young choreographer and as a member of Zodiak Presents collective. The piece was entitled Klaustro and it was performed on the stage of the KOM Theatre. Now, 30 years later, the performance is re-enacted in Zodiak Stage in collaboration with the young choreographer Veronika Lindberg.

The inspiration of the original performance was The Waste Land by T. S. Eliot, the atmospheres of which provided the foundation for the movement material and the choreography.

In the new interpretation, Pentti and Lindberg focus on themes that arise from Klaustro’s original version: the memory and the history imbedded in the body, loneliness, a jump, lightness, shadow, death, aging, nostalgia and the present moment.

Performances 21.-26.11.2017 at Zodiak – Center for New Dance
