Location: Regional Dance Centre of Western Finland studio, Turku

In the masterclass instructed by Liisa Pentti the focus is on exploring the connections between movement and imagination. The starting point is bodily sensations and awareness that create possibilities to develop your own dance methods. The course centers on curiosity-based solo work in a physically confined but mentally open space, through the possibilities opened by an online platform.

How to create a dance in any kind of space? How does somatic imagination and the activation of bodily alignments guide us to find new paths and movement-related insights? In addition to this we will surrender to music. The course is suitable for anyone interested in the collaboration of movement and mind.

This course is part of the programme of Bodybuilding 2021 festival. Bodybuilding festival is organised by TEHDAS Teatteri together with Regional Dance Centre of Western Finland and Turku Dansart.

Cloudbody #1 online performance at Bodybuilding festival

By Events

Cloudbody #1 online performance 14.5. at 19

Liisa Pentti +Co’s somatic sound art work Cloudbody #1 is part of Bodybuilding festival 13.-16.5. Cloudbody #1 will be performed free online on Fri 14.5. at 19 and the recording will be available until the end of the festival.

Cloudbody – an ecology of dreams #1 is a choreography for text, voice and image. Memories and dreams merge forming a fabric where the viewer becomes an experiencer in this surrealistic dramaturgy that materializes the logic of dreams. The room-like space creates a setting for a somatic sound art work in which the different layers of memory form an ecology of dreams.

Bodybuilding festival is organised by TEHDAS Teatteri together with Regional Dance Centre of Western Finland and Turku Dansart.

The seminar is free of charge and will be held in English

In this seminar, four dance artists and pedagogues tell about their work with people with special needs and especially with people on the autism spectrum and with learning disabilities. Saša Asentić (DE/Ser), Trude Cone (USA/NL), Sally Davison (UK/FI) and Liisa Pentti (FI) are performance and dance artists who have an interest in opening up artistic practices and developing corporeal working methods together with different groups. Each speaker has a wide and diverse working history with neurodiverse and disabled participants.

Through what kind of means is it possible to encourage the process of agency, independency and creativity in a person with autism or learning difficulties through choreographic practices? How is corporeality present in the work and how do these processes support the everyday life of a person with these disabilities? Each of the four speakers present their experiences after which the participants have a chance to ask questions and discuss the topic. The seminar is facilitated by Head of Zodiak’s Engagement Katja Kirsi.

The seminar is organised by Liisa Pentti +Co, Zodiak – Center for New Dance and Goethe-Institut Finnland.

Speakers:

Saša Asentić is a choreographer, performance maker and cultural worker. Since 2007, his work has been presented internationally. Asentić is interested in exploring the relationship between the individual and society and analyzing it in terms of social choreography. His performances were selected for Tanzplattform Deutschland in 2016 and 2020, as well as his artistic research work for Tanzkongress 2019. He has taught as a guest professor or lecturer at different education institutions: Institute for Applied Theatre Studies (University of Giessen), The Centre for Contemporary Dance (University for Music and Dance Cologne), Akademie für kulturellen Bildung, and others. Asentić works in the field of contemporary dance, performance and disability arts.

Trude Cone lives in Amsterdam, Netherlands and has worked 40 years for the Amsterdam University of the Arts (AHK), most of the time as dance educator, the last 14 years as student coach for students with problems in study/work/life from all faculties studying at the AHK. She is a certified Body Mind Centering® Practitioner, Neuro Physiological Psychological (INPP) therapist, and Rhythmical Movement Consultant, specialized in early movement patterns and learning strategies and is a member of ISMETA and BMCA.

Sally Davison (UK/FI) is a movement activist dwelling in a forest in Espoo, Finland since 2003. Davison’s work is influenced and biased by the DanceAbility method and somatic movement practices to validate the agency of the body for every body. Her work is underpinned in supporting new narratives to emerge individually and collectively to destabilise ableism and normalcy in the dance field but also in the social and cultural sectors. Davison is chairperson of DanceAbility Finland, artistic director of Kaaos Company, curator of X Dance Festival, and a somatic movement educator working in the field of well-being.

Liisa Pentti is one of the key visionaries of the Finnish dance scene. She has worked intensively as a dancer, choreographer, teacher and curator since 1987. She is moving in a landscape where dance, performance and theatre are combined, and she is well known to question and explore the limits of performative expression. Pentti has a long career as a teacher in Finland and abroad, e.g. in Theatre Academy Helsinki, European Dance Development Center (EDDC) in Arnhem, Open University and Vasa Yrkeshögskola. She also has wide experience of working with non-professionals, for example healthcare workers, prisoners and people on the autism spectrum. Pentti was awarded the State Prize for the Performing Arts in November 2019 by Arts Promotion Centre Finland and the National Council for the Performing Arts.

The seminar relates to Liisa Pentti +Co’s live stream premiere Four x duet + 1 on Fri 26th February. The work premieres on Zodiak’s YouTube channel. The video will be available until March 5, 2021. Read more

Zodiak and Liisa Pentti +Co organise an online workshop by Trude Cone at the end of February. This workshop provides tools for everyone working within the intersection of movement and mind/thought, for dance artists and pedagogues creating their own practices and artists and instructors working with special groups.

In this introductory workshop we identify concepts from movement and how they relate to the principles underlying Moving Thought: physicalizing inherent intelligence to create the embodied mind. This helps create common language to address how we perceive what developmental sequencing does. With the goal to eventually understand how to create opportunities to get the flow moving again.

Four x duet + 1 is based on weekly dance classes for young people on the autism spectrum and the bodily practices formed during the classes. Through these practices the participants’ own movement language has been able to gain space and develop.

The work, directed by Liisa Pentti, gives the weekly practice the form of a performance. Four x duet + 1 highlights the performers – the young people who participate in the classes and the dance artists that work with them. The core of the performance are duets that have been born from the collaboration of the choreographer and the performers.

The work brings to light the performers’ individual talent as well as the energy and curiosity created by the group and situations arising from artistic choices made in the moment. Each duet has its own atmosphere and content and together they form the humorous and movement-rich work.

Cloudbody – an ecology of dreams #2 is the second part of Liisa Pentti‘s solo work series, continuing the exploration initiated in The Body (2017) about meanings of the body, signifying and bodily metamorphoses. Through dance, sound and videos the work shows us images of identity transformations, layers and recollections, life after death. Images of blind stories and things that cannot be named that arise in the moment of disintegration. Images of the space that is born when the world stops.

Cloudbody #2 is inspired by the album of composer Max Richter, Memoryhouse, and neo-materialism as a philosophical background. Cloudbody #2 is a dance in the time of not knowing what the world will look like in a year. It is a dance about dancing and performing, the connection between imagining and dancing as well as about secret movements. The work tells us about the disappearance of the meaning of time, butterfly effects and dreams where we live happily ever after.

What kind of memories arise in different phases of our lives? How do we merge with those memories and how do the memories become a part of our selfhood, a part that we carry with us that is unconscious and often mute. What kind of metamorphoses are created by stepping into the image of memory?

The event comprises three different contemporary dance works that show the diversity of contemporary dance in 2020s. The programme includes Liisa Pentti’s classic solo work from the year 2011, The Weight of My Heart, where dance and personal stories form a work resembling dance theatre. Additionally, the programme includes Pia Lindy’s, Heini Nukari’s and Annika Tudeer’s Layers, a surprising and skilful improvisatory work formed of three solos as well as Mikko Niemistö’s Odd Meters where dance, sound and light create a captivating bodily experience.

The inspiration for the work Ref2020 has been Brian Eno’s 58-minute-long composition Reflection. The work, created with six dancers, suggests a new kind of connection between contemporary dance and Eno’s music where the meditative music creates singing and historicity of movement.

Ref2020 is a light work in dark times. The music and dance create a landscape inside which the viewer can allow him/herself to experience floating, timelessness and dreams that occasionally remind us about a past that perhaps never was.

Choreographer and artistic director Liisa Pentti leads a two-day movement workshop 13.-14.11. at Liisa Pentti +Co Studio at Bulevardi, Helsinki.

The workshop is based on the following questions: can we create movement that does not submit to the meanings of language and cultural images but trusts its own existence? How does the bodily knowledge in the borders of consciousness create new meanings? What is the relationship between language and meaning? How do we dance to music and how does the dancing language position itself inside music?

The rawness of our body holds a vast amount of kinesthetic information, experience and learned patterns. It also holds the elusive and indescribable self, constantly changing and transforming. The workshop will concentrate on these themes and the kinesthetic shapes arising from them. We will work with questions and states that arise from the movement creation process.

Liisa Pentti has worked extensively with meanings that combine dance and language. She has used spoken and written text in many of her works, amongst others the Cloudbody series (2019-20) Hauraat silmät – Fragile eyes (2019), Why Does My Sister Not Like Contemporary Art (2014) and Mabel – The Queen of Bones (2008).

The workshop is open to dance and theatre professionals and students as well as everyone interested in the possibilities of movement.
